Vodafone Peering Policy Changes
— What You Need to Know
Vodafone has announced changes to its global peering policy. By the end of 2025, Vodafone will disconnect from all Internet Exchanges (IXPs) and discontinue public peering. To ensure continued high-quality connectivity, Inter.link has been selected as Vodafone’s first partner to enable streamlined access through an automated paid-peering platform.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Why is Vodafone discontinuing public and private peering?
To streamline operations and focus on consistent quality and customer experience. Managing many small sessions and smaller ports creates operational overhead. - Will Vodafone stay on any IXPs?
No. Vodafone will leave all IXPs and disconnect all ports by the end of 2025. - What happens to existing PNIs?
They may remain temporarily but will be reviewed individually by Vodafone. - Will Vodafone add more partners?
Inter.link is the first official partner. Additional partners may be possible, but Vodafone currently has no confirmed plans. - Does Inter.link influence Vodafone’s pricing?
No. Vodafone sets the pricing. Inter.link only collects the fee on their behalf. - Can I connect from the same datacenter where Vodafone is present?
Yes. Ports can be in the same location but do not need to be. - Is burstable bandwidth available?
Burstable bandwidth is available, however a burst-limit has to be set and agreed. - How do I request connectivity to be set up with Vodafone?
You can place orders through the Inter.link portal or contact vodafone@inter.link. - Will Vodafone share a list of networks being depeered?
Vodafone will issue general depeering announcements to IXPs in due course. - Are similar changes happening at other major networks?
So far, only Google has implemented a similar model with its VPP (Verified Peering Provider).
